%X This paper describes the use of a wide aperture scintillation as a major potential tool to estimate thesensible heat flux (H) on heterogeneous paths over complex surfaces and as well as a data source for validationof surface energy balance (SEB) algorithms, widely used in remote sensing, over urban and rural surfaces. Themethodology applied for estimating the sensible heat flux (H) is derived from atmospheric refractivity andturbulence theories, associated with mean values of meteorological variables. We present a first evaluation of theobservations collected during the case study of September 29/2016 for the mean H observed during post-frontalconditions observed along 825 m path defined 48 m above the surface of the UFRJ campus, located in theMetropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro (MARJ), State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The results demonstrate thepotential use of a scintillometer for the continuous daily measurements of sensible heat flux behaviorrepresentative of large paths on complex heterogeneous land-cover surfaces, such as the ones usually found inurban areas. In addition, this work confirms the importance of the use of the scintillometer during research fieldcampaigns in hydrology, meteorology and engineering commonly interested and focused on water and energysurface budgets.
